🇳🇱 Netherlands visa and residence routes

The easiest big EU economy to work in English — plus a unique treaty that lets Americans start a business for €4,500.

At least one route here publishes no income or savings floor at all (Orientation Year (Zoekjaar)). Documented routes cover remote work / self-employment, employer-sponsored, job seeker and study. Naturalisation becomes possible after roughly 5 years of qualifying residence.

How Netherlands compares

It is one of the more expensive destinations we cover, at roughly €2,500 a month for one person. English is widely enough spoken that daily life and work rarely require the local language. Healthcare is among the strongest on this list. As an EU member state, it also opens the rest of the Union to anyone who eventually naturalises here.

Who these routes are built for

Based on the routes currently included in our database for Netherlands, these options suit people earning from remote work or their own foreign clients; students, who often find the study permit the most reliable first step.

They are a poor fit for retirees, since no passive-income route is published.

What the bar means in practice

The lowest income requirement, €5,350 a month on the Highly Skilled Migrant, sits against living costs of about €2,500 a month. That is roughly 2.1 times typical single-person living costs, leaving a real but not generous margin. If that is out of reach, the nearest lower bar in Europe is 🇪🇪 Estonia, which starts at €4,500 a month.

The financial bar is the main money test for that route — a monthly income floor, or the savings to show where no income floor applies. Figures are for a single applicant; most programmes scale upward for a partner or children.
